On rigour and insight in mathematical proof
Maths Education Seminar
23rd October 2024, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Fry Building, G.09
Part of the talk will be an interactive session, in particular I’ve planned a “card sorting task”. The cards have various very simple proofs on. It would help considerably if participants could read the attached proofs in advance, since I will refer regularly to particular proofs using the names given in the handout. We will discuss these proofs in the session before I report research on undergraduate mathematics students' conceptions of rigour and insight. In particular I report a comparative judgement experiments in which students, and expert mathematicians, were asked to judge different proofs of the same theorem using a variety of criteria.
