Mathematical modelling of infectious disease was brought to the fore in during the COVID-19 pandemic, both for scientific advice for policy, but also for its role in supporting the public understanding of the unfolding pandemic.
In this talk, I’ll give a brief introduction to the kind of work I did pre-2020, and then share some insights and experiences around being a university academic involved in emergency scientific advice to UK government. The pandemic also highlighted the value of science communication for public and policy audiences, as well as leaving us with some research challenges for the future.
