Magic squares of squares

I'll talk about joint work with Shuntaro Yamagishi (and parallel work of Daniel Flores) proving the existence of non-trivial nxn magic squares all of whose entries are perfect squares (or more generally perfect d^th powers). The key tool is a variant of the circle method for very singular systems of diagonal equations.
