Exceptional self-affine sets and projections

I will give an informal survey of the various known mechanisms by which a self-affine set can have Hausdorff dimension equal to the value predicted by Falconer's formula, and describe some work in progress on self-affine sets which have exceptional projections in the sense of Marstrand's theorem.
