Schubert varieties and Bott-Samelson varieties

Algebra and Geometry Seminar

5th December 2018, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Howard House, 4th Floor Seminar Room

Schubert varieties are subvarieties of a flag variety which parametrize families of linear subspaces of a vector space. They play a significant role in algebraic geometry, representation theory and combinatorics. In general, Schubert varieties are singular. Demazure and Hansen independently constructed resolutions of singularities for Schubert varieties: the Bott-Sameslon varieties. In this talk, we describe their geometric properties and automorphism groups. We also give a description of Fano Bott-Samelson varieties.
