Tropical and complex geometries
Mathematical Explain & Explore Talks Seminar
1st December 2025, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Fry Building, 2.04
When we replace the usual addition and multiplication on the real numbers by the operations of maximum and addition, we obtain the tropical semialgebra. Surprisingly, this algebraic structure appears naturally across a wide range of contexts: from teaching our Intro to Pure to neural networks, auction theory and economics, combinatorics, algebraic geometry, complex geometry and dynamics, and mathematical physics.
In this talk, I will highlight several applications of tropical geometry, focusing in particular on its interactions with complex geometry and complex dynamics.
