Relative trace formulas on GL(2)

This talk will be an introduction to the relative trace formula as a technique for studying averages of data attached to modular forms. Applications discussed will include equidistribution results for Hecke eigenvalues, and the distribution of low-lying zeros of families of modular L-functions.
