The axiomatic description of a functorial field theory, introduced by Atiyah and Segal, is one way to construct quantum field theories. But the explicit realization of classic field theories as functorial theories are far away from being obvious. As for the free fermion there are additional obstructions due to the chiral anomaly. This anomaly indicates that the corresponding field theory has to be twisted. In this talk, we discuss the construction of the twist that is used, in current research, to construct a functorial field theory for the free fermion.
