Logging the pandemic

Colloquia Seminar

24th October 2022, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Wills Memorial Building, Coutts Lecture Theatre (3.31)

During the COVID pandemic, I found myself trying to explain what the coronavirus numbers meant for us all, and how maths was a useful tool to understand them. This largely took place via Twitter, but also through radio appearances, articles for the Spectator magazine and conversations with journalists. I will share some of my experiences of this, giving some examples of how mathematical tricks helped make sense of what was going on with hospital numbers and lateral flow tests. I will also give some thoughts about the activity of Public Engagement itself, in terms of how to get your message across, how to work with the media and how to navigate the book publishing process.
