I will review the statistical interpretation of semi-classical gravity and the evidence we currently have for this interpretation. I will then use this interpretation to explain why semi-classical gravitational theories can diagnose the microscopic unitarity of black hole evaporation, despite the fact that semi-classical theories are coarse-grained theories. The general idea will be illustrated with a simple toy model for black hole evaporation, based on random dynamics.
