Dimerization in quantum spin chains via a probabilistic representation

Dimerization is a form of symmetry breaking which can occur in quantum spin chains, where translation symmetry is broken. In this talk, I will first give an introduction to this phenomenon, after which I will discuss a recent proof that dimerization occurs in a certain class of spin chains. Our proof relies on a probabilistic representation of the model in terms of random loops, and on a cluster expansion.
