Groups acting on trees and quasitrees

Algebra Seminar

2nd November 2022, 2:30 pm – 3:30 pm
Fry Building, 2.04

An aim of Geometric Group Theory is to obtain information about
a group G, given a suitable isometric action of G on some metric space
X. Suitable might well mean a geometric action, whereupon we conclude
that G is quasi-isometric to X by the Svarc - Milnor Lemma. But
what can we deduce if we allow weaker conditions on our isometric
action of G? This talk will look at the case when G acts on a (simplicial)
tree, as well as on any space which is quasi-isometric to a tree.
