Barriers and Challenges to Decolonise Mathematics

Maths Education Seminar

3rd December 2025, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Fry Building, G.07

Ideas surrounding decolonising mathematical sciences are widely contested. Mathematical subjects, including mathematics, statistics, engineering and physics are fundamentally concept-based, focusing on abstract ideas that can be applied across various contexts. Recent efforts have been made to diversify and increase participation in mathematical sciences. Addressing this issue requires increasing enrollment in university-level mathematics programs and fostering inclusivity, equity and historical knowledge construction. We will reflect on some experiences with decolonising initiatives across institutions and attempt at determine necessary actions to engage the broader mathematical community.
