The solenoid, the Chamanary surface, and extension of rational maps

Analysis and Geometry Seminar

11th May 2023, 1:30 pm – 2:30 pm
Fry Building, G07

This talk consists of two parts. In the first part, we show how starting from the binary sequences one obtains the solenoid, the Chamanara surface, and the sphere. This ties together dynamics, topology, and algebra. All these are well-known results.
In the second part, analog constructions are used to extend certain rational maps from the 2-sphere to the 3-sphere, resulting in generalized pseudo-Anosov maps. This is based on ongoing joint work with Andre de Carvalho and Toby Hall.
