Translating Noether: bringing a groundbreaking 100-year-old paper to a 21st century audience

Colloquia Seminar

12th May 2022, 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Fry Building, LG.02

Emmy Noether was a trailblazing mathematician of the early 20th century who was remarkable in many ways, defying the odds of a system stacked against her to produce work that has had a profound and lasting impact on modern algebra. Despite this, her papers were left untranslated for 100 years. I explore the history of her life and work and bring the listener on a journey through the trials and tribulations of translating a 100-year-old paper.
