Sums of roots of unity
Combinatorics Seminar
16th February 2021, 11:00 am – 12:00 pm
Virtual (online) Zoom seminar; a link will be sent to the Bristol Combinatorics Seminar mailing list, the week before the seminar.
How small can the sum of k complex nth roots of unity be? In a 1986 Monthly article Gerald Myerson gave wide bounds for even n and general k, and exact solutions for k at most 4. I'll describe progress on the case k=5 that has leant heavily on gathering large amounts of computational data.
