In 1978 Laver showed that, by applying a well-devised preparatory forcing, one may make a supercompact cardinal $\kappa$ indestructible under $\kappa$-directed closed forcing. Following from this, much work has been done to determine which large cardinals have this appealing property, culminating in a number of results across the large cardinal hierarchy. This talk will give an overview of some of these results and the various arguments used to show them, as well as details of my current work with Andrew Brooke-Taylor regarding indestructibility of subcompact cardinals.
