Group cohomology helps to understand groups and their actions. In this talk I will provide an intro to group cohomology and some of the algebraic tools it has to offer. I will then focus on GL_2(Z/p^nZ) and its subgroups. Although the study of cohomology of matrix groups has attracted a lot of interest over decades, the mod p cohomology of GL_2(Z/p^nZ) for n>1 is not known. In my PhD work I have achieved results to bring us a step closer, which I will present in this talk.
