Wave trace expansions in obstacle scattering and their application to the Casimir effect
Ergodic Theory and Dynamical Systems Seminar
23rd March 2023, 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Fry Building, G07
I will give a rigorous definition of the Casimir energy of a configuration of obstacles in space as the trace of an operator and explain why this is the correct mathematical object to consider when computing Casimir forces. I will then relate this to the Duistermaat-Guillemin wave-trace expansion and the singularity expansion of the spectral shift function. The talk is an Analysis talk and notions from mathematical physics as well as scattering theory will be explained in detail. The objective is to give a self-contained talk for which knowledge of spectral theory is sufficient.
Based on joint work with Hanisch, Waters, Betcke and Sun, and Yan-Long Fang.
