Dennis Prangle has joined the Institute for Statistical Science as Senior Lecturer. He received his PhD from Lancaster University in 2011, and has since worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Reading University and a lecturer at Newcastle University. His main research area is likelihood-free inference. This involves fitting statistical models when it is only possible to draw samples from the model not perform probability calculations, such as calculating the “likelihood function” used in most inference methods. Current and past applications of these methods he has worked on include epidemiology, particle physics and population genetics. Other research interests include experimental design, inference for differential equations and stochastic processes, and using recent developments in machine learning within statistics.
